Cloud optimization and FinOps
Cloud optimization across AWS, Azure and hybrid environments
SwedQ helps Swedish and Nordic organizations understand where cloud spend goes, who owns it and which changes are worth making. We review architecture, utilization, commitments and governance across providers.

What is cloud optimization?
Cloud optimization means running the same workloads with less waste and clearer ownership. It combines three separate levers: commercial discounts, technical savings from better architecture, and reduced consumption. Each lever has different owners, risks and lead times, so we assess them separately.
Who this is for
Organizations whose cloud bill has grown faster than their understanding of it, often after a migration, an acquisition or several teams building independently.
- IT and finance leaders who need spend allocated to teams and products
- Platform teams running workloads in more than one cloud or in hybrid setups
- Organizations preparing commitment purchases or licensing renewals
What a review covers
We start with visibility and ownership, then move to technical and commercial changes. Typical areas:
Spend visibility and allocation
Tagging, account and subscription structure, and showback so each cost has an owner.
FinOps operating model
Who reviews spend, how often, and which decisions engineering, finance and procurement each own.
Utilization and technical waste
Idle and oversized resources, unattached storage, and environments that run outside working hours.
Architecture and platform efficiency
Compute choices, storage tiers, data transfer and managed services that change the cost structure.
Commitments and licensing
Savings Plans, reservations and Microsoft licensing, assessed against actual usage before anything is bought.
Anomaly detection and governance
Budgets, alerts and guardrails so unexpected spend is noticed in days rather than at month end.
AWS, Azure and multi-cloud differences
AWS and Azure price, discount and report differently. Commitment models, licensing benefits and billing hierarchies are not interchangeable, and hybrid estates add on-premises licences and network costs. We compare like with like and keep provider-specific recommendations with the right specialists.
- AWS-specific work, such as Savings Plans and account structure, is covered on our AWS cost optimization page
- Microsoft licensing and Azure commercial questions are covered by our Microsoft and Azure team
Security and resilience trade-offs
Not every saving is worth taking. Removing redundancy, shortening backup retention or consolidating accounts can weaken security or recovery. We flag these trade-offs and leave the decision with the owners of the risk.
How an initial assessment works
An assessment is scoped before it starts and usually follows four steps:
- A short conversation about goals, providers and constraints
- Read-only access to billing and usage data, agreed with your team
- A prioritized list of findings, separated into commercial, technical and consumption levers
- A walkthrough of the findings and an optional plan for implementation or ongoing FinOps support
What we do not promise
We do not promise a specific saving or percentage. Results depend on your environment, usage, contract terms and which recommendations you choose to implement. Preliminary findings are clearly marked as estimates until they are verified.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as AWS cost optimization?
No. This page covers vendor-neutral and multi-cloud optimization. For AWS-only environments, our AWS cost optimization service goes deeper into AWS pricing, Savings Plans and account structure.
Do you need write access to our cloud accounts?
No. An initial review normally uses read-only billing and usage access. Any changes are implemented later, by your team or by SwedQ, under an agreed scope.
Can you review Microsoft licensing as part of this?
Yes, where licensing affects cloud cost. Detailed licensing and commercial arrangements are handled together with our Microsoft and Azure specialists.
How much can we expect to save?
We cannot say before reviewing your data. Commercial discounts, technical savings and reduced consumption vary widely between environments, and we do not publish savings figures we cannot verify for you.
